P.6 artist Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn will present Quietly Amongst the Disquiet, a new film with original music by Thảo Nguyễn, produced entirely in New Orleans by Marion Hoàng Ngọc Hill and a vibrant team of local collaborators. The film, entitled, Amongst the Disquiet, spans the multiple generations of Vietnamese in New Orleans to consider the entanglements of migration and memory, home and history, land and water.

In this special presentation, the film's score and dialogue will be given a unique take as it is enacted live. The musicians and actors will perform a “living soundtrack”; synchronizing presence and voice with the “memories” explored in the film.

Performances will take place November 2nd from 3:30pm-5pm and 8:30pm-10pm.

About the Artist

Tuấn Andrew Nyugễn

Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn is an artist whose work utilizes strategies of remembrance to highlight unofficial and suppressed histories. Interweaving the factual and the speculative and often employing mythologies of otherworldly realms, Nguyễn’s films, installations, and sculptural practice re-work dominant narratives into stories that propose creative forms of addressing the intergenerational traumas of colonialism, war, and displacement.

Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn received a BFA from the University of California, Irvine in 1999 and an MFA from The California Institute of the Arts in 2004. He is a founding member of The Propeller Group, an entity that positions itself between an advertising company and an art collective. He recently had a solo exhibition at the New Museum, NY and his work has been included in major international festivals, biennials, and exhibitions including at the 12th Berlin Biennale; Manifesta 14; Aichi Triennale; Biennale de Dakar; 2019 Sharjah Biennial; 2017 Whitney Biennial; among many others. Nguyễn is the recipient of the 2023 Joan Miró Prize. His work is included in the permanent collections of institutions including Philadelphia Museum of Art, MoMA, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Thảo Nguyễn

Thảo Nguyễn, known for her distinctive blend of indie rock and folk, has continued to evolve artistically and personally since dropping the lengthy moniker of “Thao & The Get Down Stay Down” in 2021. Her latest album, 'Temple,' reflects a profound exploration of themes like freedom and belonging, shaped by her experiences reconnecting with her cultural roots during a trip to Vietnam. This journey is also the subject of her intimate documentary, "Nobody Dies," which premiered to critical acclaim. Additionally, Thao’s recent involvement in PBS's Southern Storytellers series further highlights her narrative strength and ability to connect with diverse audiences through her music and storytelling. Balancing personal vulnerability with broader cultural commentary, Thao remains a prominent voice in the contemporary music scene.

Marion Hoàng Ngọc Hill

Marion Hoàng Ngọc Hill is a New Orleans-based director and producer with roots in Vietnam, France, and the UK. Her filmmaking approach emphasizes process and collaboration, drawing the work's meaning from within the unfolding collective journey of exploration, discovery and healing. Raised as a classical pianist since age four, Marion makes films that are always musically driven, making this collaboration with Tuấn and Thảo a particularly natural synergy. Following her award-winning debut feature film Ma Belle, My Beauty at Sundance 2021, she has focused on producing films and music within the diasporic Vietnamese communities of Southern Louisiana.
